You are to research the history and development of typography. Begin from the earliest forms of written communication and take us through to the current digital era. Discuss how technology has influenced type design. Highlight significant events in printing and typographic developments. Mention notable typographic designers and discuss their influence.

Typography and Graphic Design Visual Analysis
Due: Wednesday, April 4
Length: at least 5 pages
Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins.


For this assignment you will perform a rhetorical analysis of an organization?s website. A rhetorical analysis essay considers a text in relation to its audience, purpose, and context and evaluates how the text uses rhetorical strategies to get its point across.

You will draw on many concepts from the course, although you do not (and should not try to cover all of them, or even most of them!!) I would like you to pay particular attention to the visual cues (depth, movement, form, color), typography, and graphic design layout (contrast, balance, rhythm, unity).

Once you have chosen the organization?s website, you should consider the audience and purpose. Below are some things you might keep in mind.

Audience: A group of people who may or may not be persuaded by a document
Different audiences have different taste for certain visual styles.
Does the document do anything to visually address a particular audience?
Does the document ask for or require any background familiarity with its subject matter or is it referencing a popular, visual style that certain audiences are more likely to recognize?

Purpose: What the text is trying to persuade the audience to believe.
Three different purposes
Informational: document seeks to impart knowledge on its audience.
Inspirational: document seeks to inspire emotion without having clear goals.
Motivational: document seeks to spur direct action.
Functional: document seeks to explain a task.

With the audience and purpose in mind, analyze how the website uses visual cues, typography, and graphic design to make an argument. The argument might be something like ?Our company supports its employees,? or ?We think that animals need to be protected.? Answering the question of how the organization gets this argument across is the rhetorical analysis.

All essays need a strong thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be something like:
?The corporate website for Plan B, a Chicago advertising agency, actually incorporates the company?s creative multi-media marketing techniques while maintaining a streamlined design with easily-accessible information so that potential clients can see an impressive result as they acquire information about the company.?

The topics addressed might be:
- Multi-media marketing techniques: use of depth (video in background) and movement.
- Streamlined design: fonts, simple shapes, color contrast.
- Time: what you look at first; how the viewer simultaneously takes in what s/he sees and reads.


Your paper must be at least 5 pages. It should have:
- a clear thesis statement in which you make an argument
- easily identifiable topic sentences
- cited examples from the website
- analysis of those examples
- correctly formatted Works Cited page

Typography

Utilize typography to create one design that clearly communicates four (4) different ideas, words, or compound words through both the text and the graphic design. You may use either hand-drawn or computer-generated type for this assignment. You may create it in a software-based document or scan your design and create a JPEG graphic file. The objective of this assignment is: clear and creative communication through text and typographic design. (3 pages)

My work will be evaluated on how well and how creatively I communicate the idea, word, etc. in both text and graphic design.

The assignment that I am going to list the next is not due until January 31, 2012, so you have plenty of time and there is no rush for this to be completed. (06 pages)

Focus of the Final Project

Communicate one (1) complex idea, body of information, or message using three (3) different approaches to visual communication. Some examples of ?approaches to visual communication? include:

Information graphics
Symbols and signs
Shapes and colors
Images and groups of images
Charts and graphs
Typography
Cartoons and illustrations

In addition to the visuals, write a two to three page paper reflecting on why each approach is effective in communicating your message, and which of your approaches you feel would be most effective. Explain your reflective responses. Your visuals must clearly and effectively communicate the message and reflect the application of material covered in this course. Your

Final Project must provide a clear and rational analysis of the effectiveness of each visual in communicating the message.

The Project for the course must be submitted to the instructor by 11:59 p.m. of the time zone in which you reside on the last day of class.

Writing the Final Project
The Final Project:

Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (excluding the cover and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in your approved style guide.
Must include a cover page that includes:
- Title of assignment
- Student?s name
- Course name and number
- Instructor?s name
- Date submitted
Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.
Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
Must conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph.
Must use at least two scholarly resources
Must use APA style as outlined in your approved style guide to document all sources.
Must include, on the final page, a Reference List that is completed according to APA style as outlined in your approved style guide

Essay Instructions: -Conduct a study of typography on the Internet or in mobile devices. How has type on the internet changed over time? Is hypertext a typographical innovation?

- Bibliography of at least 7 items. No more than 2 internet sources ( articles retrieved via online databases count as "print" sources).
