Martha Stout presents us with individuals whose lives have been turned upside down by a violent act. Susan Faludi offers us The Citadel, a military institution whose traditions of learning seem based as much on hazing in the dormitories and the "fourth Class system" as on the books in the classroom. Tim O’Brien tells us a true war story is “about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do.” In your next essay please use specific examples from all three authors to answer the following question. For those who have been touched by trauma, what role does fear play in the development of their identity?
