Essay Instructions: Pertaing to the Tao Te Ching, and Genesis 11-38. #1 Introductory information: What type of genre of text is it and how is it organized? Who was the author, and who was the intended audience? When was it written, and where, and in what language? Who translated it and when? #2 What message does the text essentially contain? What are its fundamental points? For example: What is the primary content of the text, and what is it attempting to achieve? What are the basic themes? #3 What significance did the author intend for the text to have for its original audience? Ex: In the mind of the author what was at stake, and what truth or value was the author asserting? What problem of the time was the author asserting? #4 What is the true significance of the text, from us being the readers point of view? Ex: are the key ideas in the text true or false? are they valuable and why? #5 Identify by citation and discuss one significant, specific passage in the text. This paper must NOT contain any quotations of any kind. The format should be left justified which means it should not read like a newspaper column but rather the traditional academic process. • Read the edition of the Tao Te Ching by Lin Yutang on the “Terebess Asia Online (TAO)” website, http://www.terebess.hu/english/tao/yutang.html.
• Then select a part of particular interest on which you wish to focus, perhaps one chapter or a few, and read the commentary, following the translation of each chapter, by Nina Correa at “The Dao Is Open” website, http://www.daoisopen.com/BYNina.html.
• Heading at top left: Name, Course Title, Brief number and title, Date Due
• Skip one line and begin writing. No further title is necessary.
• First paragraph consisting of two parts, usually two sentences.
• Thesis sentence: concise statement of your overall point regarding the Tao Te Ching.
• A sentence (more than one if necessary) regarding plan for logical development of your paper. For example, “The paper will show evidence of the thesis statement in three stages: X, Y, and Z.”
• Then subsequent paragraphs should start with a thesis sentence for each paragraph and then develop the major idea of that paragraph.
• After your paragraphs developing your thesis, please add a brief concluding paragraph that sums up your points and possibly suggests what further direction your thought may take on the matter you have discussed.
