To give you a practical insight into the Business Strategy process at work in an organization, this assessment task requires you to collect and analyze information relating to the topics covered in the subject, and apply these to the British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010.
The British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in significant strategic impacts for BP.
“The Deepwater Horizon accident impacted many people, from local communities and businesses in the Gulf Coast region to our customers, colleagues, partners and shareholders around the world” (BP, 2012)
Using information from a variety of sources, address the following:
• Give a brief account of the main events that led to the oil spill in 2010. Can you identify the bad or wrong moves that contributed to the incident?
• Identify the main stakeholder groups who influenced and/or were impacted by the incident. Can you identify the most important people/ communities /organizations /etc that either contributed to or were heavily impacted by the oil spill? What claims do they place on the company and how is the company trying to satisfy those claims?
• Given what you know of social responsibility and business citizenship, discuss why this oil spill was a significant event for BP, the strategic implications for BP, and how a similar incident could be avoided in future.
