One voice that had not been previously heard in American literature was that of African-Americans. With the works of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, we see the concerns about equality that the 18th century philosophes only talked about, written from first hand experience.
Not too many literary types have been brand new but the slave narrative is and Douglass' is the most famous. Make sure you read the introduction to this work, which describes this unique kind of literature. If you're like me, you take your own literacy for granted, as an unquestioned part of your education. It's pretty shocking then to see what Frederick Douglass had to do to learn first reading and later, writing. This appears to be a very straightforward autobiography but Douglass has artfully constructed it with contrasts that point up the injustice of keeping black people as second-class citizens. He says to his young friends, "'You will be free as soon as you are twenty-one, but I am a slave for life!'" (Notice that his owner's wife who begins to teach Douglass is in a similar situation. She will never be free either, at the mercy of her domineering husband.)
Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" has a different feel about it because it is the transcription of a speech and originally meant to be heard rather than read. Her voice sounds very real, very authentic, as though we were there listening to her. But don't let the folksy phrasing ("Well, children") and the use of dialect ("ain't got nothing more to say") fool you into thinking it's as spontaneous as it sounds. Notice that she uses the title question as a kind of punctuation throughout the talk. If you read this one out loud, you'll hear the rhythms of the speech and see how she gets interaction from her audience ("That's it, honey.")
Because one person speaks up and becomes a voice for issues that concern her, she paves the way for all the other people to speak their mind too. However, notice that what she advocates - racial equality and women's rights - are more than a century away still. Are we there yet?

1. Discuss, from the works, “Ain’t I a Woman” and “John Brown’s Final Speech”, the struggles that the people of these works had to manage and how they sought to triumph over these struggles. Bring out key points that were hurdles for them to over come in seeking their individual rights that they desired, as well as why these rights were taken from them. How could they bring about change in their world that would effect today?
2. How profound was the “Emancipation Proclamation” for people like Sojourner Truth and John Brown, and yet, how could they have been denied these rights as individuals? Discuss the plight they had and how they used their cause to bring about change for others that they, themselves did not see. Discuss in detail.
3. Discuss the problems that former slaves had after hearing of their “Juneteenth” and those associated with the “Unreconstructed Rebel”. How did these people seek to over come their plight and how did these resolutions to these problems lay the foundation for the rights and freedoms of others for the future? Please give detail to your answers.
4. Compare the trauma that any one of the characters from Unredeemed Captive to “Ain’t I a Woman” and/or “John Brown”. If these characters could interact, what words of wisdom might they tell each other to inspire each other to carry on in their deeds for redemption? What might they do to encourage one another in keeping their beliefs that freedom will come? How did they live a life that would inspire others to be like them in their faith?
5. Contrast/compare Joseph Martin to John Brown or Sojourner Truth in their fight for freedom for themselves, as well as others. Give details to the means by which these people had influenced their time, as well as the present. What did they do to bring the rights of others into fruition today?

Essay Instructions: I need a paper comparing ida b. wells, and sojourner truth. We just got finished reading crusade for justice, and the autobiography of sojourner truth, so those are the only two books that are needed in the works cited. I need to compare and contrasts their philosphies, and talk a lot about their accomplishments and strengths, and how if they came into contact with each other what would happen. Would they like each other? Compliment each other? This are just hypothetical, but anything can be used here. I need to use quotes from both books, and also cite them.
