Essay Instructions: A research paper over public health in america and american urban history.
Focus on public health concerns in MAJOR american cities AFTER the Civil War to World War II.
What were these concerns? How were these concerns solved?
How did the undertaking of handling public health issues help the development of MAJOR cities in the U.S. Give specfic examples of major cities and what they did and what these cities problems were.
Make sure that water and water supply is given much attention in this paper. Also talk about human waste, and garbage collecting, etc. Dont be limited to these suggestion, but make sure water is given attention.

Final Paper: An important component of this course is the research paper (30%). Select a topic pertinent to Public Health. Write a 10-12 page paper that will include at least 6-8 evidence/research-based references (no Wikipedia!), an abstract, and a graph or chart (data) if applicable to your topic. The 10-12 double-spaced pages do not include your cover sheet and reference pages.

The research paper should include an introduction of the topic, a body in which the topic is developed and references cited, and a well-defined conclusion. I strongly recommend that you contact me with the topic of your paper before you begin your research. The topic you choose may be too broad or too narrow, and a discussion may help you to focus so that your learning will be maximized and your paper will be the best it can be. Your paper can be turned in at any time, but must be submitted no later than the last day of week 7.

Assignments must follow American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for reference and bibliographic citation. If necessary, refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Ed), 2001. Other APA websites are available through the Library and some are listed in the Week 7- Research Paper Lesson.

The paper must be typed, double-spaced with 1-inch margins in 12-point Times New Roman font with all references cited. Papers will be graded based upon: 1). the extent to which students followed directions for the assignment, and 2). overall presentation (including clarity of argument, grammar and spelling) (see grading rubric for more specific grading information).

Essay Instructions: Conduct a brief qualitative needs analysis of your community. Using the questions provided below, interview two members of your community about the perceived public health needs. Consider the barriers to addressing significant public health issues within the community and think about resources available that might help to address them:
How long have you lived in your community?
What do you believe are the greatest health issues that exist within your community and who are the populations you believe are most impacted by these health issues?
What are two barriers that exist within your community that you feel could negatively influence these health issues (e.g., no public parks, pollution from a particular factory, no major hospitals or grocery stores)?
Why do you think those barriers exist?
What kinds of resources exist within your community that could help influence the health of individuals within your community (i.e., hospitals, community clinics, non-profits, etc.)?
Consider the resources available within the community to help address the public health issues.
