Operant conditioning has many uses in our everyday lives. Behavior modification uses mostly operant methods in an attempt to change undesirable behaviors such as bad habits. Similar principles are also used in behavioral therapy for a wide range of psychological disorders. Closer to home, operant conditioning can be used to modify the behavior of ourselves or our children and to train pets. In this project, we will look at how the behavior of an animal or person can be changed by using reinforcement of desired behavior.
Consider the following questions as you complete Project 1:
How can the principles of operant conditioning be applied to changing behavior?
How does reinforcement contribute to behavior change?
Complete the following:
Choose a bad habit or other undesirable behavior that you would like to change in yourself, a child, or a pet. Describe the behavior briefly and explain why it continues even though it is undesirable. What reinforces the behavior? Using the principles of operant conditioning, design a plan to change the behavior by substituting a more desirable behavior for the unwanted one. This may involve several processes including extinction of the original behavior and reinforcement of a replacement behavior. Describe the steps involved using the appropriate terminology related to operant conditioning.
Write a 750 to 1000 word response to the above assignment. Use information from the textbook and at least one other source of information. The source should be specific to the topic and not an encyclopedia or other general reference.
