It must focus on beginnings of life, their natural environments and their evolution in changing environments from the beginning to the end of the Cambrian explosion.

The key theme of the essay is ‘the history of life during the Cambrian explosion and the evolution in natural environments’.

When you are writing the essay always remain conscious of the title/theme and stick to it. Ask yourself ‘what is the point of this particular line of reasoning/argument’ every time you put in some more facts or ideas. If it doesn’t really add much to the main thrust of the essay then consider dropping it. Always write in the third person; never use terms like I think, me, we, etc. The final point about essay structure – your essay should have a point! Ensure it has a section at the start introducing the topic and outlining the background and scope of the essay. The central sections then present the detailed evidence. The essay must then have a CONCLUSION(S) section at the end. This is perhaps the most important section of the piece as it should pull together all the elements of the essay and synthesize all your ideas, observations and interpretations into a
coherent argument.
It is very important that you properly reference your sources of information along the way. Use the formatting system of the Journal of the Geological Society of London and stick to it rigidly. That system employs a reference citation something like (Skywalker 1980), (Kenobi and Skywalker 1977) or (Vader et al. 2005) depending on the number of authors. Note: Christian name initials are not used in the main text and the et al. bit is italicized. Christian name initials do appear in the full citation list in the REFERENCES section at the end of the essay. Note in this list the use of small caps on the author names and that the (Skywalker 1980) reference is a book, so the title is italicized and the publisher (Hoth) left plain. The 99pp refers to the total number of pages in said book. There is also an indent on the second line of a reference citation.

THINGS TO OBSERVE AND RECORD
I. Primate Characteristics(30 possible total points)
Common names for the animals may be used; however, proper scientific names (Genus species) must be cited correctly at least once for each.
Following the six points below, you will need to observe and record data on six primates:
6 Anthropoids:
1 Platyrrhine (New World Monkey), 2 Cercopithecoids (Old World Monkeys: 1 terrestrial and 1 arboreal), 1 lesser ape (gibbon), and 2 Great Apes (non-human).
1. Sex: See if you can identify the sexes. Are there any noticeable genitalia color differences between males and females? Is there any sexual dimorphism? Are males larger than females? Are there any differences in coat color?
2. Locomotion: Is the species you are observing a quadruped, leaper, brachiator, arboreal, terrestrial? Do their limb proportions suggest a different mode of locomotion in their natural habitat?
3. Limb proportions: Describe the limb proportions (forelimb relative to hindlimb) for each of the primates you observe. Also describe the differences in the proportion of forelimb to hindlimb, if any, between male/female and young/adult proportions.
4. a. Hands and Feet: Give a description of the primates’ hands and feet. How is the hand used in locomotion? How is the thumb and big toe used? Does your species appear to possess nails or claws?
b. Tails: Do the species you are observing have a tail? If so, how is the tail used?
Does it appear as though the tail would have a different function in their natural environment?
6. Exhibits: Give a brief description of each of your species’ exhibits. Also, describe how each species utilizes the exhibit, e.g. are there areas/features/substrates that they use more often, not at all, etc.? 3

II. Compareand Contrast(6 possible total points)
1. Old World monkeys versus New World monkeys: Compare and contrast arboreality in New World and Old World monkeys. Does one species appear to be more arboreal? Is there differentiation in tail use, hand and foot use? Does body size appear to be a factor?
2. Gibbons versus Great Apes: Compare and contrast arboreality in gibbons and Great Apes. Note: arboreality among Great Apes will probably be most visible in females and/or infants.
3. Gorillas and Chimps: Compare and contrast the social groupings of these 2 Great Apes. Does one group tend to stay in closer proximity to each other than the other? Are there any visible differences in activity levels between chimps and gorillas, i.e. does one appear more active than the other? Who utilizes more area, both vertical and horizontal, chimps/gorillas/males/females/adults/immature individuals?
III. Interaction(2 points)
Sympatric species: In the Helen Brach Primate House there are 2 exhibits that have more than 1 primate species housed together (2 platyrrhine species and 2 cercopithecoid species). What are the interactions like within each exhibit? Do the species interact? In what way? Do they appear to be antagonistic toward each? Do they occupy the same area/substrate? Do they appear to ignore each other?
IV. Other(4 possible total points)
1. At the south door of the Helen Brach Primate House there is an “Enrichment
Board” detailing the things zoo personnel do on a daily basis to enhance captive species’ daily experiences and activities at the zoo. Many of these are to address primates’ natural curiosity and combat boredom. There are a variety of enrichment categories listed on the board. Indicate which category (or categories) was in use on the day (or days) you visited and provide examples that you saw in each of the enclosures.
2. Inside the Regenstein Center for African Apes there are activity budgets listed for both gorillas and chimps. Compare the daily activity patterns of these 2 species. Using the interactive display compare your activity patterns with gorillas and chimps, are you more similar to a chimp or a gorilla?
