Essay Instructions: This paper will be on Israel and the communication problems you will have when you go there.
You are consultants in the field of workplace communications and have been hired by a major company to design an intercultural communications guide for their employees who will be representing the company in Israel. The company is experiencing rapid growth with a planned expansion of their business into targeted global markets within 6 months. The Chairman of the Board and all of the directors are expecting great profits from this expansion and do not want any negativity about the tight schedule or cultural training that must be completed.
The current internal situation is that the company has a loyal and trusting employee base but they do not have the cultural diversity needed to easily enter into these Global Markets. In the past Upper Management has been very insensitive to the needs of their employees and did not develop any guidelines. They are understaffed and have decided to budget for the training and guide but not for more employees, even the loyal long term employees are dissatisfied. Most of the employees feel left out and nervous about where the company is headed and the stability of their employment.
Your team is here to identify the problems, develop solutions, institute formal policies, and help this company with the rapid expansion.
Your job is to create a formal employment Intercultural Business Guide. Identify the potential internal communication issues that the company may face. Also, identify the problems you will face in Israel and develop solutions for these problems. For example: The language would be a problem so you would hire a translator. You will define and discuss what problems and solutions you can find in the following communication issues:
1. General information about Israel.
2. Languages spoken.
3. Government structure and currency in use.
4. Safety alerts within the country.
5. Business Dress Guidelines.
6. Welcome topics of conversation and those are not acceptable.
7. How to address others with respect.
8. Gift giving and appropriate business gift.
9. Negotiating rules for business.
10. Proper business entertaining.
11. Hours that business is conducted.
12. Accepted tone of voice in a business conversation.
13. Acceptable colors and what they may mean.
14. Things considered unacceptable in a business situation.
15. Other interesting facts about the country or facts regarding business communications.
16. Also, include phone etiquette, email responses, authority guidelines, return policies, and reward incentives.

As US citizens, we tend to believe that we live in the best country in the world. To our way of thiking, our way is the "right way" and anyone who does not live in the United States is somehow underprivileged or disadvantaged. Coupled with that idea is the notion that members of other countries and cultures that do not like the United States are somehow "jealous" or "bad people".

The idea behind this paper is to get you thinking about how it is possible to grow up somewhere else in the world and have an anti-american attitude. Doing so it will enable you to think through issues of intercultural and intercultural relations in concrete, personal terms, and to apply concepts intercultural communications to an "almost real" situation; to practice intercoltural empathy.

The point is you will be creating what I have dubbed an "anti buddy" a fictional, but realistic character living in one of the many troubled spots of todays world. YOUR TASK IS TO IMAGINE as realistically as possible, an on the basis of solid information- how this person might think, act and communicate under various circumstances, in interraction with other members his/her culture as well as you, the "outsider" or American".
