Title: Assessing Specialized Instructional Strategies for Teaching Reading

Total Pages: 6 Words: 1698 References: 7 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Assessing Specialized Instructional Strategies for Teaching Reading

“Reading” is a term that encompasses so many elements, from the most concrete learning-to-read skills of phonics and fluency, through the most sophisticated reading-to-learn abilities to evaluate primary source materials in social sciences or interpret figurative language in poetry. There are evidence-based reading practices that can be adapted to work at any level and in any content area for students with a range of diverse disabilities. Instructional strategies, even those in basal readers and texts, are often not based upon the most current reading research. It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher and special education leader to study and assess if a strategy is evidence based.

This assignment is your opportunity to study, in depth, an area of literacy in which you are particularly interested. Now that you’ve engaged in reviewing the full spectrum of reading instruction, find, read, and evaluate two research articles about teaching a particular reading skill to students of the age and disability level that you are most concerned with now.

To prepare for this Assignment: Select an age range and a disability level (mild, moderate, and severe) with which you are most interested in learning more. Select a literacy topic to explore (for example, one of the domains in the National Reading Project’s [NRP’s] Big 5, or one of the strategies for teaching Social Studies described in the Coyne et al. text). With these ideas in mind, search for two peer-reviewed articles for the disability level you selected, that provide an evidence base for the literacy/reading strategy selected. These articles should be authored by different researchers.

Assignment directions:
1. Provide the APA style reference for both articles selected; no earlier than 2007
2. Briefly describe each study. This description must include:
a. A brief description of the study participants
b. A brief description of the intervention implemented
c. A brief description of the study findings
d. Assessment of the extent to which this study has “strong” evidence of effectiveness.
Be specific about the elements of the National Center for Education Evaluation, and Regional Assistance (NCEERA), U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences. (2003). Identifying and implementing educational practices supported by rigorous evidence: A user friendly guide.
Retrieved from http://www2.ed.gov/rschstat/research/pubs/rigorousevid/guide.html#titlee research that offer support for the intervention’s evidence base.
3. Compare and contrast the two studies selected, in terms of the interventions researched. In what ways were the interventions tested similar? In what ways were they different?
4. Conclude the evaluation of the articles by discussing key concepts learned about the teaching of reading/literacy/social studies from these studies. Identify questions you still have about evidence-based practice in this area.
