Total Pages: 5 Words: 1715 Works Cited: 0 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: A 5 page double-spaced essay on Mao Zedong and China’s search for a modern

form in the 20th century is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

The essay should be written in academic format with title, citations of all evidence, page

numbers, and bibliography. Check your Freshman Rhetoric Guide for the appropriate

MLA format.

Develop a thesis (your argument, your interpretation) which allows you to evaluate some aspect of Mao’s life, thinking, and/or contribution within the context of the social, political, and cultural history of modern China. Part of your assignment is to show your knowledge of this period by presenting a synthetic analysis of materials relevant to your thesis which could include J. Spence’s biography of Mao, “To Live” directed by Zhang Yimou, J. Wasserstrom’s “China in the 21st Century,” writings on the Three Ways of Thinking, and Mao’s writings from his Selected Works or Little Red Book. Anything we have used for the class can be used in your essay. The discussion questions below should be useful to you in narrowing down your focus. You should not do outside research for this paper. I do not want you to find papers and articles on Mao (of which there are many). Spend your time honing your thesis, analysis, and written presentation. Your interpretations are important, but you must always provide evidence to substantiate them.

This Essay is about Mao Zedong's view on gender inequality.
The inequality of women was one of the issues addressed by New Culture activists, including Mao. Access Mao’s theoretical and actual record in working toward gender equality. Spence mentions the newspaper articles Mao wrote in 1919 concerning the suicide of Miss Zhao. These are some of the first and most heartfelt writings of Mao concerning the inequality of women.

In my paper I would like to address that yes we have to eliminate gender differences in some areas of life in order to reach equality. And to give examples these ares are : parenting and employment. The readings are about employment, parenting and how government can contribute.
