Essay Instructions: Midwestern Contemporary Art Case Study

After reading the Case 6: Midwestern Contemporary Art in your text book, prepare your case analysis based on the following. Your analysis should be 1,500-2,000 words and follow CSU-Global APA guidelines.

You are Peggy Fischer. You want to collect the $5M pledge from Peter Smith, and previous calls have gone unanswered. Your board wants to sue, but you would like to try some tactics to pressure the Smiths instead of going through with the lawsuit. You put together the following worksheet to help you plan out your influence tactics.

You can make the following assumptions in preparing this worksheet: a) you are able to reach and communicate with the Smiths, b) you are focusing on what to do now rather than what you could have done to avoid the situation, and c) if the MCA board decides to sue, it will be personally embarrassing to you, with a very public acknowledgment that you could not avoid the scandal of a lawsuit.

1.What were the goals of an original negotiation?
?Was your original BATNA? What was its value?
?What are your interests (as opposed to your position)?
?What are some options for mutual gain?

2.Identify influence tactics: which ones could you use on the Smiths?

3.What power bases do you (as Peggy Fischer) have in regards to each of the Smiths? Explain.

4.How might you (again as Peggy Fischer) draw on your personal network to influence each of the Smiths? Explain.

Essay Instructions: Exploring Contemporary Art with Theory (Philosophy of Art)

Select a contemporary (post-1970) work of art and proceed in the following manner:

Submit a full catalogue entry;

E.g. Jane Doe
Looking, 1990
Oil on canvas board
25.2 x 35.4 cm
Coll. MMFA

Describe the work. Begin with the obvious: the nature of the object (i.e., a painting, oil on canvas) and the subject matter (i.e., a portrait). Describe the media employed in the object you have chosen and how their properties affect the overall work (i.e., oil paint mixed with encaustic creates a waxy reflective surface).

Note the major compositional components. For instance, in painting, whether it has vertical, horizontal or diagonal layout, its colours, play of light and dark, etc. If it is representational, describe how the images are rendered (i.e., naturalistic, expressionistic, idealized, etc.). Always refer directly to the object to substantiate your claims.

You must be extremely precise in your description. Imagine that your audience will never get to see the actual work and you are reconstructing it with words for them.

Include an illustration of the work (B&W is fine). If you can’t get a photocopy of photograph, draw the work.

In this section, you will interpret the work using a theoretical framework examined in class and discussed in the textbook (i.e., either Realism, Expressionism, Formalism or Postmodern Pluralism). You will not be able to cover every perspective offered by each theory, so choose one or two authors associated with each to explore in depth (e.g., if you were using Realism you might choose Plato and/or Kant). You can examine any author discussed in the textbook. Be sure to select a theory that is well-suited to your work of art (for instance, do not choose Realism to discuss an abstract work).

First, give a brief overview of the author’s understanding of the salient (read: prominent) features of art. Then, interpret the work using their framework. For example, those students influenced by Aristotle will emphasize the work’s contribution to knowledge through realistic representation; those engaged with Kristeva will investigate the idea of the abject and its effect on the viewer.

Examine your interpretation. Do you find it satisfying, or are there areas of the artwork that you feel were left unexplored? What would you expand upon to make this work more meaningful for your audience?

When you quote or paraphrase an idea that is not your own, be sure to include references. Properly formatted parenthetical references or footnotes, and a bibliography (minimum 4 sources) are required to receive a passing grade. This paper should be double-spaced and written in 12 pt font.
