Essay Instructions: In this paper I would like to examine the controversial filmmaker, Michael Moore. I plan to analyze his criticisms of American culture and politics as portrayed through his documentary film style. Moreover, I will show how his filmmaking style, though simple and unabashed in its dissention from mainstream American ideology, is a particularly effective means of presenting his arguments. I would also like to discuss why exactly his films are so controvertial. I specifically plan to discuss the films, Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine, and Roger & Me. Furthermore, I will argue that Moore?s choice of subject matter is intentionally confrontational, and is meant to challenge the status quo. However, through the combination of humor and political muckraking, Moore has managed to find a powerful means to express his dissatisfaction with what he considers to be fundamental flaws in American society. I will also include a comparison of Michael Moore?s work to that of other agitational filmmakers such as Spike Lee, and how effective each is in effectively conveying its criticisms of America.
