1. Discuss how Sarah Orne Jewett and Charles Chesnutt contributed to the local color fiction of the nineteenth century with stories of their respective regions (Jewett writing of New England and Chesnutt the South).


2. Explain why Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, or Edna St. Vincent Millay is considered a Modernist writer. Use at least two poems to support your points.

Your essay can be about any of the assigned readings. Give your reaction to the story, your impression of the story, how it relates to your life, or anything--as long as it involves a story you read for this class.
Week 1: Read Anne Bradstreet. Post to the discussion group.
Week 2: Listen to Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God preached. Discuss in the discussion group.
Week 3: Read about St. Jean de Crevecoeur and What is an American? Post to the discussion group.
Week 4: Read about Phillis Wheatley and Philip Freneau and find their poetry online. Whose do you like better and why? Post to the discussion group.
Discuss the readings, what did you think of each of the stories? Did it have any meaning in your life? Is it still relevant today? Were there things you didn't like?

Essay Instructions: The subject of my essay is how the Great Depression affected American Literature. This essay needs to have a literary focus, not a historical one. One topic to explore is how the Depression affected what author's wrote about; for example , the death of the American Dream. Please include reference to a few specific authors, Steinbeck, for example. Again, this is a literary essay. The essay should have a thesis statement in the introduction. Thanks.
